AutoCAD: Computerisation Versus Drafting

INCREASING COMPUTER USE IN CONSTRUCTION: FASTER, MORE ACCURATE RESULTS

Computer applications in building construction not only have become common but also seem to allow faster, more accurate results. This section will discuss my professional observations of this progress, the connection to the computer industry’s self-assessment, and the relationship between the two.

My Experience of the Computerization of Building Construction

As an older student who has spent his whole life in the field of construction, I have seen and experienced the changes from hand drafting to AutoCAD drafting or computer assisted drafting.

I must say that it has been quite the change.  As early as the nineteen-sixties computer assisted drafting; these programs provided automatic creation of standard shapes (lines, circles, arcs, dimension, lines for example) and allowed architects to draw large complex drawings for major buildings that were comparable to hand drawing.

The Industry’s View of Building Construction Computerization

At about the same time, the computer assisted drafting programs were becoming widely used in large architecture firms.  Computer assisted design programs were appearing in the engineering design world.;  http://csanet.ORG/inftech/cadbklt.html

Progress in the Speed and Accuracy of Results

My experience as a carpenter in the field of construction when the changes started is that there was much inaccuracy.  Many of the measurements on a drawing did not add up.  Today’s  programs  are so accurate that it is barely believable. Technology is always taking us further and making life easier for us as workers.
